SiSS – Safeguarding in School Sport

The Safeguarding in School Sport accreditation scheme (SiSS) has been in Dudley primary schools for the last 3 years and has proved extremely successful with Headteachers, Business Managers and sports coaches as a quick and easy digital platform to access fully accredited sports coaches in a wide variety of sports. It also provides excellent evidence for safer recruitment for the Section 175 safeguarding audit. With schools returning to a new normal in September, it is vitally important to ensure only vetted and accredited sports coaches are delivering in schools.  The use of sport and physical activity in the recovery phase will have huge benefits for children.

  • Access to a web-based system of approved sports coaches and physical activity providers.
  • Approval of the members of SiSS is undertaken by safeguarding in sports specialist with 25 years experience, giving peace of mind to schools.
  • The system will not give validation to providers who do not meet the SiSS safer recruitment criteria re relevant qualifications and training (First Aid, Safeguarding and Prevent), DBS clearance, self-declaration, references, safer working practice and relevant insurance.
  • The system will highlight whether a provider is up-to-date with all the requirements giving schools up to date reassurance.
  • The system gives a profile for each provider with a photograph ID showing all the sports and physical activity sessions they can deliver, highlighting whether they can deliver independently or as an assistant, taking the responsibility away from schools re determining the suitability of qualifications.
  • The system will enable schools to search for providers of individual sports giving a ready to use, validated workforce.
  • Technical support will be available five days a week during business hours.

When schools take up the yearly, or three-yearly, option of SiSS, School Life will implement the following in addition to the current features:

  • Creating a ‘favourite coaches’ list that schools see when clicking the SiSS button, will save schools vital time searching for regular attending coaches.
  • Digital ID badges for coaches to present to schools on entry.
  • Additional Medical section for coaches, so schools can see if coaches have had COVID vaccinations for example.
  • School Life will implement a 5-day week contact service for the schools and coaches (currently it is only Monday and Fridays) so they can raise issues and concerns.
  • Plus, as is the same with any School Life service, we will always look to make improvements where we can.
